Overview

Mt. Makalu Base Camp Trek, located remote region of Eastern Nepal, is less visited by the main flow of trekkers, due to its remoteness and accessibility. Understanding the nature of trekking for Makalu base camp, where tented camping is essential for your comfort. 

 

Vertex Holidays provides all camping equipment two men tents, toilet tents, dining tents as per group size with a separate kitchen tent department.All meals cooked in camping are fresh, healthy, and hygienic meals as we carry kerosene of LPG gas stoves for cooking, as we follow Eco-Tourism and and Responsible Tourism norms and rules, not to damage our pristine natural environment.The area falls within Makalu and Barun National Park and Conservation Areas covers 2,330 Sq. Km. Located Sankhuwa Sabha and Solu Khumbu Districts, bordered by the Arun River on the east, Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park on the west, the Nepal-China border on the north, and Saune Danda (ridge) to the south. The park has some of the richest and unique species of plants and animals, lost elsewhere due to human habitation. Starts with tropical Sal forests below 1,000 m elevation; From 2,000 m above trees of fir/birch/rhododendron forests in the sub-alpine ( 3,000 - 4,000 m); and herbs, grasses, and rhododendron/juniper shrubs in the alpine pastures. 

 

More than 400 species of birds, wildlife includes the endangered red panda, musk deer, Himalayan black bear, clouded leopard, and possibly the snow leopard, in addition to more substantial populations of ghoral, Himalayan Thar, wild boar, barking deer, Himalayan marmot and weasel, common languor monkey and the Serow.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu and Nepal International airport, after immigration formalities, and then collecting your baggage head for exit where our staff and guide will receive you, with a warm welcome and then transfer to your hotel. A short drive into the heart of Kathmandu city, around Thamel the most interesting place for all travelers. At the hotel check into your rooms, after a short rest from the jet-lag then meet your guide, and other fellow members of the trek for briefing regarding your stay in Nepal with full information of the treks, with do’s and don’ts. Evening group welcome dinner in a nice authentic Nepalese restaurants with folk Cultural program to entertain with your dinner.

Day 2 : In Kathmandu with sightseeing tour and trek preparation.

At Kathmandu, a free and leisure day with sightseeing tour at places of great Historical and cultural interest. Most of the ancient sites listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The rest of the afternoon preparing for Mt. Makalu base trek.

Day 3 : Fly to Tumlingtar 865 m- 45 mins and drive to Num 1, 500 m / 1,560 m - 03 hrs.

Morning as flight for Tumlingtar, transfer to domestic airport, after going through security formalities. Board in aircraft, as the plane takes off heading due east, overlooking a panorama of Himalayan peaks with Mt. Everest, Mt. Makalu, and  Mt. Kanchenjunga. After 40 minutes on air, the plane lands at Tumlingtar airport located on a shelf of Arun River within sub-tropical climate. Meet our field and camping staff with porters, walk to Tumlingtar town. From Tumlingtar getting organized for an exciting drive on rough road heading through large town at Khadbari, headquarter and administration of Sankhuwa Sabha district.Drive continues ups past hill villages and farmlands to reach Chinchilla, placed on a high hill, with a glimpse of Mt. Makalu from here downhill drive into forest to reach and stopping for first overnight stop at Num village. Which is the start and endpoint of our trek. Overnight either in village simple lodge, or tented camping close to the village at schoolyard, here with time to explore this nice hill village with surrounding views of mountains and green hills.

Day 4 : Trek to Seduwa 1,510 m- 05 hrs.

The first-day walk starts with downhill to reach a small bridge above raging Arun River, within a narrow deep gorge and then a steep climb to Seduwa village. As trek climb continues past small spread-out farmhouses and crop fields, growing millets, wheat. Having a lunch stop served by our camping chef and kitchen crews. After lunch another few hours uphill to reach a moderate size farm village at Seduwa, where air gets cooler with overnight in tented camp near the village schoolyard.

Day 5 : Trek to Tashi Gaon 2,070 m - 04 hrs.

From Seduwa, walks today is short of few hours to reach Tashi Gaon, the last village and permanent settlement of the Sherpa community. Which is the gateways of Makalu and Barun valley, a pleasant morning walks after breakfast on gradual winding trails. Leading through farm areas with a short climb to Tashi Gaon, a nice moderate hill village populated by the Sherpa tribe. Reaching Tashi Gaon by lunchtime as well for overnight stop, afternoon free for short hike, explore the village witness local culture of Buddhism religion.

Day 6 : Trek to Khoma Danda / Ridge 3, 760 m - 05 hrs.

After Tashi-Gaon, heading into complete mountain wilderness, as there are no villages with some temporary Yak herder huts and shelters and few simple and basic tea-house that serves as lodge with local plain meals. Morning begins with a short easy walk into a densely forested area, and cattle grazing field within tall rhododendron, oaks, pines, hemlocks, and pines and magnolia trees. After a few hours of steep climb reach Khoma Danda for overnight camp. At Khoma high ridges, the vegetation of short bush with smaller tree of birch, juniper with rhododendron bush, offers grand views of Mt. Makalu, Baruntse and Mt. Kanchenjunga in the east direction.  

 


Day 7 : Trek to Mumbuk 3,520 m - 06 hrs.

From Khoma Danda camp, enjoying a good breakfast served by camping cook and kitchen staff, start the walk on a long ridge crossing smaller passes of Tutu-la and Shipton-la, follows a small path past small glacial ponds of Thulo and Sano Pokhari(Big and small ponds). As the walk continues with a long descend to reach back into tall tree lines at Mumbuk for overnight camp amidst rhododendron and pine forest with views of Kumbhakarna Himal.

Day 8 : Trek to Nehe Kharka 4, 320 m - 05 hrs.

Walk in the morning down to scenic Barun valley for overnight camp at Nehe Kharka, a small temporary settlement with a simple lodge within Yak Herder shelters and a summer pasture for cattle to graze. Morning a short downhill to reach a wide valley, and then walk to an open country beyond tree lines enclosed by towering cliffs, and snow-capped peaks. After a great day&#39;s walk reach Nehe Kharka for overnight camping on the fields close to Yak herder’s camp and local tea-house.

Day 9 : Trek to Makalu base camp 4, 870 m via Sherson 4, 610 m - 05 hrs.

Morning after breakfast heading towards our main highlights and destination at Makalu base camp.Walk follows small streams that later join Barun and Arun River further downstream. Following a high trail with some vegetation around of Burberry, junipers and dwarf rhododendron of Azalea species that blooms into little flowers in late spring of April and May.  

The trail continues gradually up to cross few streams and then reach a place called Sherson, the last place with a grassy field with some vegetation, stop here for hot lunch prepared by our cook and kitchen hands. Afternoon walk continues for few hours, taking slow as altitude gains around dry and arid mountainous terrain. Then the hike ends finally, at Mt. Makalu base camp the highest point of the adventure at 4, 870 meters and 15, 978 feet high. Our guide and camping staff will find a good level ground to set tents, in the meantime enjoy the views of towering peaks with massive glaciers and frozen ponds next to the camp.

Day 10 : Local excursion.at Makalu base camp

Free day at Makalu base camp, after a continuous walks of week, morning after late breakfast with leisure time for a short hike to some high view-points to get best and closer views of surrounding high snow-mountains with Mt. Makalu. Makalu base camp, the only place in all Himalayas where one can catch a rare view of Mt. Everest and Lhotse East Face, which is known as the Khansung Face of Everest. Afternoon relax and enjoy the beauty of surrounding awe-some mountain scenery.

Day 11 : Trek to Yangre Kharka 3, 645 m - 06 hrs.

Enjoying great times with amazing views and hiking, morning clear the camp and then after breakfast start our return journey back to lower areas. Walk leads on the same path with gentle descend to reach Yangre Kharka, a place with temporary shelter of cattle herder, having few huts made of stone that serves as Tea-House or Lodge.

Day 12 : Trek to Mumbuk - 06 hrs.

From here leaving the scenic Barun valley, as route follows for steep climb, to

reach back into vegetation and forested area. Where our overnight camp is

pitched in the same area as before.

Day 13 : Trek to Khoma Danda / Ridge - 05 hrs.

A great scenic and pleasant morning trek, as the trail leads over a high ridge to cross Shipton and Tutu-La passes to reach Khoma Danda hilltop, for last overnight camping around mountain wilderness.

Day 14 : Trek to Nawa Gaon 2, 500 m via Tashi Gaon - 05 hrs.

Today, an easy walk on long descend to Tashi-Gaon for lunch stop, after a refreshing break, taking a higher trail above Tashi-Gaon into cool shade of forest and farm areas to reach a large Sherpa village at Nawa-Gaon. Overnight camp on fields and terraces, with time to explore around this lovely village to witness more of Sherpa culture and custom.

Day 15 : Trek to Num via Seduwa - 05 hrs.

Our last and final day of the trek, morning walk on downhill to Seduwa village and then with last descend to reach a river gorge, cross over a suspension bridge with the last climb of the adventure to reach Num for overnight stop, either in tented camps or in a nice small simple local lodge.

Day 16 : Drive back to Tumlingtar - 04 hrs.

From Num after breakfast, board in a vehicle, either jeep, four wheels drive or similar types, which is good for mountain roads. Drive leads up to Chinchela farm village and then downhill to Tumlingtar past Khandbari town. On reaching Tumlingtar check into a nice local Lodge, with a free afternoon to browse around this interesting farm town of Eastern Nepal.

Day 17 : Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

As per flight time for Kathmandu, walk towards the airport terminal after bidding farewell to our field staff and porters, and then board in an aircraft for a short scenic flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival at Kathmandu domestic airport our guide and staff transfer you to your respective hotels, after a great panoramic flight and amazing adventure on Makalu and Barun valley trek.

Day 18 : Departure

Last day in Nepal in the country of Himalayan wonders, as per your international flight time either morning, afternoon, or evening. Vertex Holiday guide and staff transfers you to the airport for a homeward journey or to the next port of call.
