Upper Mustang Trek is an excursion to the forbidden Himalayan Kingdom, which is situated in the upper part of the Mustang region. The landscape is unique and wonderful, which is similar to the Tibetan arid highlands. Upper Mustang Trekking was opened in 1991 as a restricted area trekking and it requires a special restricted area trekking permit.  The trek offers exciting Himalayan views, gorges passing wonderful ethnic villages.

The trek to Upper Mustang initiates from Pokhara with a short flight from the route between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges. Landing at Jomsom, the Upper Mustang trek approaches towards Kagbeni and split the trail to the hidden land of the Tibetan Buddhists. Walking through the windy valley is tough, however fluttering Buddhist prayer flags on the rooftop of the whitewashed houses, monasteries, and Chhortens make the trip outstanding. Though the landscape of the Upper Mustang is dry, there are several colorful flowers and vegetation that the local area can be seen awesome.

This trek can be known as the Lomanthang trek as it is the most significant place and a spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhists. It is surrounded by a stone wall. The lifestyle in Upper Mustang is traditional and cave-style settlements. The cultural aspect is prospering in this mystical kingdom. Local people celebrate different festivals like Tiji. Their costumes rituals and social practices are surprising on the exploration day in Lo-Manthang you can visit the historical Palace, Monasteries, Chhortens, and houses made of mud. Exploration of ancient Gompas is more fabulous on the rest day. The trek retraces all the way to Jomsom and flies back to Pokhara with the views of the deepest gorge-Kali Gandaki.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrive in Kathmandu (1300m), transfer to hotel

Namaste and welcome to Nepal. After your arrival, Kathmandu, Vertex Holiday’s airport representative receives you at the airport and transfer to the hotel. After getting refreshed, we give you a short briefing and orientation by our trekking leaders. The evening is wonderful with dinner with the Nepali cultural program. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 2 : Full day Cultural Tours in Kathmandu valley/ Trip Preparation and briefing.

After breakfast at the hotel, set out for the sightseeing tour in Kathmandu, these include UNESCO listed world heritage sites. Kathmandu is a city of temples and medieval arts and architecture. There is Pashupatinath temple, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, Kathmandu Durbar Square in Kathmandu. However, there are in total of seven world heritage sites in the Kathmandu valley. Returning back from the sightseeing tour, you get a short trip briefing. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3 : Kathmandu to Pokhara (910m): 6 hrs drive.

From Kathmandu, we drive to the tourist town of Pokhara. As an option of the driving, you can take a flight and see the views of Langtang, Manaslu and Annapurna region peaks. If driving, tourist buses leave at 7 am and you have to check-in at 6.30 am. Through the winding road, we drive for 6 hours and reach Pokhara. Walking throughout the lakeside city is fabulous. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4 : Morning flight to Jomsom and trek to Kagbeni (2800 meters).

Early in the morning, we fly from Pokhara to Jomsom. The flying route lies between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. After landing at Jomsom, we trek through the bank of the Kaligandaki windy valley and the bank of the River. Kagbeni is our destination today, which bears the features of the Upper Mustang. Day 5 : Trek to Chele (3050m)

Today, we officially enter the Upper Mustang. Following the bank of the Kali Gandaki River, we reach to the Tangbe village. Then the trail becomes narrow. Passing the traditional houses with fluttering prayer flags, buckwheat fields, and apple orchard, we reach Chhusang village. The Nilgiri peak peeps us frequently from the southern section while heading further. Walking further, we can see a red chunk of conglomerate on the steep sandy rocks. A narrow alley leads us to Chele village. Overnight at lodge.

Day 6 : Trek to Geling (3570 meters).

We go on clinging through the arid hills, which is similar to the Tibetan highlands. Passing steep canyon and reaching the ridge top, we begin to trek down passing some beautiful Chhortens. Reaching to Samar village, we trek down to a gorge that steadily leads to the fields and again climb up to the ridge at 3800 meters. Crossing another pass, we descend to Syangbochen. Another pass off 3770 meters, we trek down to Gelling and rest. Overnight at lodge.

Day 7 : Trek to Chrang (3560meters).

After breakfast, we gradually climb up from Geling. We approach the Ni Lya pass with the scenarios of colorful sandy cliffs. Then we trek down to the Tangmar River and cross the bridge. Then we walk passing the longest Mani wall of Nepal. Walking continually, we reach another pass of 3600 meters and again descend gradually to the Charang village. The five-storied Dozing Buddha paintings and wonderful monasteries are salient offerings of the trip. Overnight at lodge.

Day 8 : Trek to Lo Manthang (3840 meters)

After breakfast, we begin our trek passing a couple of picturesque villages. On the way, we visit Lo Gekar Gompa, which is an ancient Gompa in this region. Steadily, we reach our most awaited part of the Upper Mustang. Lo-Manthang is the place, which is a stone-walled town. It is surrounded by the old pattern of life. Various Gompas encircle the town. Enjoy the surrounding views and ethnic hospitality. Overnight at lodge.

Day 9 : Visit Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar.

This is an exploration day in Lomanthang. Among some options, we go on visiting around the villages and explore some famous Gompas. They include Namgyal Gompa and others. After that, we go on exploring the last village of Upper Mustang- Tingkhar, which is a tiny picturesque village. The Tibetan Buddhists are highly spiritual and the Buddhist prayer flags flutter at the top of their houses, Back to Lomanthang and rest. Overnight at lodge.

Day 10 : Trek to Dhi (3410 meters)

We walk to Dhi from Lo-Manthang. The trail is windy and it becomes tough with the sandy wind. The side views are superb with the colorful flowers and bushy vegetations. The red rock walls and flat trail are just amazing. Walking through the western Upper Mustang valley, we reach to Dhi, one of the well-established villages of this area and rest. Overnight at lodge.

Day 11 : Trek to Tange (3240 meters)

After breakfast, we descend continually for a couple of hours to the River. Then we cross the river and climb up the hill from the next side of the River. We reach the pass of 3850 meters. We can see the bushy grasslands and most of the scenarios with treeless brown hills. Then we descend to the Tangbe village (3370m). The village has around 30 houses and there are firewood collections at the top of every house. Overnight at lodge.

Day 12 : Trek to Chhuksang (3022 meters).

Right at the beginning, we climb up towards the hill ridge. The views of the down and windy valleys are awesome. Avoiding the sandy wind, Tetang village has been settled down to a safer zone to stay. We stay there as it is the safer village from the sandy wind. Overnight at lodge.

Day 13 : Trek to Muktinath (3780meters).

This is the second last day of our trekking. We start to walk after having breakfast. We follow Kaligandaki River until Kagbeni. Exploring the panoramic views of Kali Gandaki valley and Kagbeni, we check out from the Upper Mustang region. And we ascend up until Muktinath.

Day 14 : Trek to Jomsom (2713meters)

On the last day of the trek, we begin to walk after breakfast. We follow the trail via Jharkot monastery. The ancient fortress lies there. It was the center of this region once. Reaching Jomsom, we enjoy a small celebration on the success of the trek. Overnight at lodge.

Day 15 : Morning flight to Pokhara and same day Sightseeing around Pokhara.

This morning, we take a half an hour flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. Then we drive to the hotel. Then we prepare for the city tour around Pokhara: Davis falls, Mahendra cave, World peace stupa, International mountaineering museum, and others. Later on, we can also enjoy the boat ride. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 16 : Pokhara to Kathmandu (1337m): 6 hrs drive (or 30 min flight).

Today, we drive back to Kathmandu. It’s a scenic drive through the Prithvi Highway road. Optional, if you take a flight, it's half an hour's flight. After your arrival at Kathmandu, transfer to the hotel. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 17 : Farewell.
