The Nepali Calendar:

The Bikram Sambat, as mentioned above, originated by King Bikram and was widely used from the beginning of the last century. As per Gregorian / Christian calendar, in Nepal, all government offices and the public are used to Bikram Sambat. Bikram Sambat is a tribute to King Bikram, and Sambat means year, similar to AD or A.D.

It stands for Anno Domini and is a label for numbering years after Christ was born. B.C. means Before Christ, and from the year Christ was born is considered AD 1. As well, the year before that is labeled as 1 B.C.

The Bikram Sambat is similar to the Christian calendar, with 12 months a year; the only difference is the year. The days of a month are with longest 32 days and short of 29 days. From the New Year month of Baisakh (mid-April), Jestha, Ashadh or Asar, Shrawan / Sawan, Bhadra / Bhadau. Extends to Asoj / Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun, and the last month of Chaitra or Chait. Most holy and religious events take place on the full moon, which is mentioned in the Nepali Calendar.
